HIDDEN FACTORY - Science-Fiction? Ridiculousness? Or Real Manufacturing Value?

Imagine a ghost factory existing in a parallel dimension inside a manufacturing plant. Now, this might sound like a work of fiction but bear with me in this metaphor, because there is a very valuable point to be made. We are referring to the hidden potential of manufacturing plants. There's always some unused/untapped performance potential in most manufacturing plants. This unused potential is called "hidden factory", and the term was coined by Armand Feigenbaum in the late1970's. What if you could tap into all that leaking potential? What if you could increase productivity and performance without adding any additional manufacturing investment? When Armand Feigenbaum introduced this concept, he also believed that the loss in productivity/performance due to the unused potential could have been up to 40%.

SALES OR SCIENCE?

This title probably steers one in the direction of thinking of Sales as a science. We, however, will be exploring a different path in this article. Sales has undoubtedly always been a science, as well as an art. But the matter we are going to explore here is something else entirely. There is no disputing the fact that technology has forever revolutionised the business world. But is it possible that despite all the glory that has been attributed to technology, there are still areas it has gone unrecognised in?

What Is Digital Twin?

Imagine you are in your office, tied up with important work that cannot be delayed; and suddenly you get a call about a serious machinery maintenance issue that needs immediate attention. What is the one thing you wish you had the ability to do the most at that very moment? You wish you could somehow get an accurate and exhaustive view of the ground reality that physical presence in front of the machinery would give you, but you would want it without having to leave your office. Well, a decade into the future, that would probably be a reality, right? Nope, not right. Because it is already a reality! Sounds a bit too good to be true, does it not? Does it not seem like it is out of a Sci-Fi movie? With today’s Sci-Fi movies that stretch our minds to maximum capacity, it is easy to lose track of what is already a reality. Digital Twin is exactly the kind of technology that makes you raise your eyebrows and ask yourself, “Is this real?"

For ages, paperwork has been the official mode of documentation, reporting, and file management. While there has been a massive shift in the way things are done, paperwork does still exist in the business world in some capacity; and in a lot of cases, it could do a lot better with less of it.
